Frequently Asked Questions

Here at Peachtree Septic, we want you to get the best possible service. From time to time, we answer questions from our clients and interested parties. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask us. Below are the answers to a few questions we hear quite often.

1. How does a septic tank work?

A septic system is made up of two parts: a tank and a drain field. The sewage flows into the tank, after which the wastewater and excrement separate. The solids fall to the bottom and decompose over time while the liquid part moves through a filter into the drain field and then into the soil where it will be detoxified.

2. What is the best way to maintain a septic tank?

Septic tank maintenance is not as big of a task as most may think. By creating a schedule, you maintain your septic system like a pro. For starters, be sure not to flush large items such as diapers or paper towels down the toilet. Also, avoid pouring things that usually clog drains down your sink. Grease is an example of something that you don’t want to pour down your drain.

3. How often should I service my septic tank?

A well-functioning septic tank should last three to five years. However, you shouldn’t wait that long before servicing it - you should have it inspected for leaks, blocks or pipe erosion every year.

4. Should I employ the services of a professional to inspect and clean my septic tank or do it myself?

It is not impossible for you to inspect and clean your septic tank yourself, but it can be arduous and inefficient. Therefore, we recommend that you employ the services of a certified professional to ensure that your tank is properly inspected and cleaned.

5. How can I tell if my septic system is failing?

When a septic system fails, it is due to an issue with the drain field. In some capacity, the drain field is not working properly. When this happens, it causes the tank to overflow. A full tank can then lead to you pipes getting stopped up. If you’re looking for signs that your septic system may be failing then check for: a gurgling drain, a slow flushing toilet, the smell of sewage, and wet areas or puddles on or near the drain field.
